Can I get a refund if London Stansted airport made me lose my flight?

Forum

Hello, so two days ago I arrived at London Stansted airport from Italy, where I had to get another flight to Copenhague. I was only supposed to be at the airport for an hour and a half but when I arrived the whole airport was a complete mess. The passport checker system had gone down so there was only one long line where I lost most of my time, I finally made it 20 minutes before my flight took off but had to go through security where the line was also super long where I eventually ended up losing my flight. I know it’s not the airline’s fault but thanks to the airport passport mistake I had to stay one night in London and book another flight for the next day which was 164 pounds. Between hotel, trains, flight, and food I must have spent around 280 pounds or even more and am looking to see if I can receive any compensation from this.

If anyone has had a similar experience I would gladly take your guidance.

  1. Rule 2: More details. Flight numbers, airlines, dates of travel, was it separate or one ticket connection? Etc

But based on what I know about STN and the airlines operating (Ryanair or Easyjet) there I doubt you had a one ticket connection given that you had to clear immigration for some reason. So no, STN airport doesn’t owe you anything for your missed flight. Neither do either airline. This is the risk you take booking these kinds of itineraries.

  2. More specifics are needed per the rules of the sub but based on what you said, no, you aren’t owed anything. I’m assuming you booked two tickets separately rather than connecting on a single ticket or else your airline would’ve booked you on a new flight. If I’m right, sorry, this is what happens when people book connecting flights separately in the name of saving a few bucks – it’s a gamble, and every so often, it goes bust.

  3. You miss flights, not lose them And no, you can’t do anything. STN is London’s worst airport. Suck It up, buttercup.

  4. All London airports are terrible. If London were smart, they’d close Heathrow and distribute flight to the remaining three airports temporarily while Heathrow was leveled and rebuilt as a state of the art airport capable of handling all flights, then shut down Gatwick (awful) and Stansted while keeping Luton (quite good since renovation) as secondary airport…

  5. I left the UK (emigrated) from Luton last year and was pleasantly surprised. I hadn’t been there in about 30 years and it was like night and day frim back then. Stansted is the worst London airport IMHO.
